Being situated in the heart of the town and largely surrounded by shops and offices,
the Church serves a widely-scattered residential neighbourhood. The premises are extensive
and are in regular use every day of the week catering for the needs of a variety of both
church-orientated and non church-orientated organisations (see "The People").
It is an integral part of the community life. Rentals from attached shops and offices (see below) provide
resources to maintain the fabric of the premises.

The foundations of the building were laid down in 1841.
The church originally belonged to the Countess of Huntingdon's
Connexion but became a Methodist Chapel in 1858. Over the years it
has undergone considerable internal alteration to keep abreast of
changing fashions. Its most recent development, completed in 1993,
has produced a light, attractive and adaptable environment primarily
for modern worship but also ideally suited to other drama and musical
presentations. The Church and adjoining premises are in constant use
each day for a host of organisations and activities.
